So, I've seen this not only when it comes to Green Day, but also other bands I like. Some fans claim that they've followed the band since they started so they're "hard core fans" or what have you. But as soon as the band releases something different from what they've been doing, some fans flip out! They start saying that the band has never done this kind of music, or it's a disgrace, blah blah!!! I'm like, if you're such great fans, you should support what the band is doing. Yeah, maybe it's different from what they've done in the past, that doesn't mean they've turned on you and their fan base.
This happened when American Idiot came out. A lot of people thought Green Day was now "main stream" and they were trying to fit in and crap. Just because they moved on from singing about masturbation and getting high doesn't mean they're a different band. It just means they're maturing and trying different things. Don't call yourself a fan just because you've followed Green Day before Dookie. Call yourself a fan because you support what the band is doing, and because you like them. Who cares if the band is popular?? Ignore what other people are doing, and just think for yourself for goodness sake!!!
Same thing happened when AFI came out with Decemberunderground. Miss Murder was a huge hit off that album, so anyone who dared to like that song was not considered a fan. They were considered "poser fans" or something. That's just not fair. I became an AFI fan when Miss Murder came out. That doesn't mean I listened to just that song over and over again. Everyone has to be introduced to the band somehow. A lot of Green Day fans were introduced to them by American Idiot. That doesn't mean the those fans like just that song. It just means that's how they found out about them. Sure, I admit, there are some fans who are just crazy for like 4 songs off American Idiot, and they call themselves Green Day fans, that's a little annoying. But just because they didn't like Green Day when they first started out doesn't mean they're "posers".
What are your opinions on this?
